Kooringal, meaning "by the water", is Moreton Island's largest township, home to approximately 150 houses. Kooringal Township is located on the southern tip of Moreton Island. Kooringal is popular with holiday makers and Brisbane people who maintain weekend homes. There are no recognised roads out of Kooringal although there is a route up the eastern beaches. Like the island's other settlements, Kooringal is a tiny village which services 4WD visitors and bushwalkers. The Moreton Venture is a vehicular ferry which runs to both Tangalooma and Kooringal. The trip takes around 2 hours. A four-wheel drive is a necessity as most access is via driving on the beaches.
